DNA extraction from strawberries

In biology class, Ms. Sonnenschein and Mr. Szumyn conducted an exciting experiment with the 4th-grade class to extract DNA from strawberries. Using simple materials such as dish soap, salt, and alcohol, the students were able to make the strawberries’ genetic material visible.

The students watched with great interest as the DNA settled in the glass as a whitish, thread-like mass. The experiment provided a hands-on glimpse into the world of genetics and impressively demonstrated that science can be made tangible and understandable even using simple materials.

The students participated enthusiastically and were thrilled to successfully perform their own DNA extraction.
